Jack FogartyTHE FIRST ‘JACK FOGARTY MEMORIAL’ 28th May, 1939

A handicap over a distance of three miles was conducted at Rocklea on Saturday 28th May, 1939 to perpetuate the memory of a prominent Rocklea Harrier member (Southern Suburbs Amateur Athletic Club now QE2 Track Club) - Jack Fogarty who was accidentally killed a few months earlier.

This event has been held annually ever since, with members of his family in attendance.  Since that time it has been a tradition for the club to host and staff the course.

The first race attracted an entry of 60 competitors with 49 lining up at the start.

The results of this first race were:

  • 1st E Thompson            GPS  18mins, 5secs. (Handicap 22secs from go)

  • 2nd L Spottswood          KG  18mins, 6secs. (Handicap 10secs from go)

  • 3rd L Henderson            R’lea 18mins, 10secs. (Handicap 10 secs from go)

The scratch runner R Ruhanen of Toowong Harriers started 3mins behind go. Well known Official, Eddie Barnacle was a competitor in the first ‘Jack Fogarty Memorial.’

THE ‘MRS B.M.FOGARTY MEMORIAL’

Mrs Fogarty was Jack Fogarty’s mother and was a great supporter of Rocklea Harriers, as was the rest of her family.

She passed away a few years ago and her memory has been perpetuated since with an event for Under 17 years runners.

Both of these events are sponsored by the relatives of Mrs Fogarty and Jack and the Southern Suburbs A.A.C.

We wish to thank you, the competitors, for your support in perpetuating the memory of these great supporters of Amateur Athletics.

Doug Fox, an uncle of Jack Fogarty, was an Official and  Life Member of Q.A.A. A Doug and Mary Fox Memorial is held for younger age groups. Their son Cec Fox has proudly supported these event for many years.

This distance event is held in the May of Each year and we invite all runners to put this in their calendar as a worthwhile event for all concerned

For a number of years now Life Members from the club have flagged the course, ran a canteen sold raffle tickets and have been marshals on the course. Any monies raised by us has been donated back to the Cross Country Commission to help provide transport for athletes chosen in the State Cross Country Team.

For those people in the club who do not know the history of this day Mr. Cec Fox who is the Patron of the QE11 Club provides funds for 17 gifts for the 3,4,6 & 9 k races and 6 trophies for the Under 10,12 & 14 girls & boys. He and his family attend this day every year to present trophies.

We run a small canteen selling sausages and onions on bread (Sausage sizzle) tea and coffee cakes, biscuits lollies and limited soft drinks. (every athlete who competes is given a drink provided for by the Cross Country Commission). The raffle is usually a fruit tray.
